Air Sander vs Orbital for Awlgrip prep.

Post by lsheaf »

Hey guys,

A friend of mine is having his boat painted in Grenada. The painter won’t sand the boat with anything but an air powered sander because it supposedly doesn’t leave as many marks.

Is it critical to use an air sander for prep or will a regular orbital give good results as well?

I would think it’s not necessary but I have never used awlgrip before.

You'll have no problem with visible scratches in awlgrip or any paint by using the right grit paper on a random orbital sander. An orbital sander does leave scratches but the random orbital like the one you probably already own is no problem. An air sander is usually a dual-action (DA) sander and has some advantages but nothing you need to be concerned about.
