I am repairing my main halyard winch. Winch is original 1968 PT model. The small metal "links" attached by spring inside winch won't come out (to reveal the screw underneath.). How do I remove the spring and metal links attached to the spring?
Hard to explain but if you've done it you'll know.
Thanks for your help.
best,
Sandy

Hi Sandy,
I'm not quite sure what you mean in your description. I'm assuming you're describing a Merriman/Southcoast No. 1 winch? (The smaller version)
I have one on my desk in front of me that I just removed from the mast earlier in the week. The interior workings couldn't be simpler: four pawls (two at the top, two at the bottom), each of which are held in place with small springs.
Or perhaps you're referring to the disc on the very top of hte winch that hides the big screw that holds the whole thing together? Hmm. The winch I have is missing that, so I don't know exactly what the setup is--and all my other winches are "real" (i.e. modern) winches.
Can you clarify at all, in case someone else here has a better idea about it than I do?
Tim
