Galvanic barrier

Post by Surveyor »

I have a new stainless steel Garhauer mast plate (halyard organizer) which I would like to install. My mast step is cast aluminum so naturally I am concerned about galvanic corrosion. Given the rather large area of contact between the two metals I have my doubts about using something like TefGel.

What would make a good galvanic barrier in a situation like this? Should I even worry about it? What have others done/used?

I used PTFE (Teflon) "gaskets" for all stainless fittings on my spars and tefgel on the fasteners. 1/16" or 3/32" sheet should be sufficient. McMaster sells them for a pretty reasonable price. http://www.mcmaster.com/#sheets-%28made ... 29/=h4zj4r Look for "Film—Smooth Finish" towards the bottom of the page.

Seems reasonable and will not cost too much. Thanks for the tip and link!
