diesel milage

Post by Robert The Gray »

I was curious about fuel tanks and cruising range. I would like to have a small fuel tank with about 4 hours of fuel in it. What does the average two cylinder diesel consume per hour at around 2000rpm? I have a volvo penta md7b.

I would use 1/2 gallon per hour in your calculations. Something like a 6 gallon tank would be about right for what you suggest (allowing for the unusable quantity in the bottom of any tank, as well as a small reserve).

My 35 foot trimaran had a 20 HP diesel- Yanmar 2QM20. At around 1800 - 2000 I would run a steady 1/2 gallon per hour. Had a 12 gallon tank and figured that at 24 hours of cruise time. Always worked for me.
