Engine box air supply.

Post by Canuck »

My Yanmar 2GM is in a fully enclosed compartment that will be lined with sound insulating foam. It is open at the bottom to the bilge. Will I need another air supply for cooling and combustion ? I will also be installing a higher output alternator which may also benefit from some cooling air.
I was thinking maybe a 12 volt computer/electronics fan directed at the alternator.
Necessary ? Thanks.

It certainly isn't necessary for combustion. A 2gm doesn't swallow that much.
I probably isn't necessary for cooling, but it's certainly desireable. I find this to be particularly true on hot windless days, when the last thing I want is a bunch of engine heat making its way into the still air of the cabin after shutdown.

I have a 3" (i think) 12v computer-cooling fan mounted to the underside of one of the dorade vents in my poop-deck. I have it set up as an exhaust fan, with a flexiduct routed near the top of the engine. I wouldn't reccommend setting it up as a supply fan.
