My transom lettering is in hand. I think I want to do a little surgery to some parts of this, almost to the point of having individual letter decals to lay instead of the handy-dandy one big sheet.
Am I creating my own nightmare, or is this stuff easier to work with than I remember? (previous experience 15 years ago 3'x6' decals on truck body)

I've always found the vinyl to be easy to work with. As long as you have good reference marks on your transom, you should have no trouble even applying individual letters. "Slippery" water (water with a little bit of soap in it--not too much) flooded over the area gives you the ability to slide things around as needed to properly align them.
Good luck! Post a picture. We Maineiacs will toast you and Figment with a Mt. Gay or two.

The stuff is super easy to deal with. As Tim said: plenty of sudsy water helps. When I did my lettering, all of my letters were separate. (I cut my own) Piece of cake. You can read about it on my site here
