Rubbing Compund

Post by Ganges #363 »

The glossy (not non-skid) areas on my deck and cabin are in basically good shape, but dull. I"ve waxed in the past, but I think a rub out with some rubbing compound will really bring back the gloss.

Any suggestions as to the best compound to use? And the tools, process, etc.?

For my hull, after wet sanding the gel coat, I have used an automobile cleaning compound. I was told that it translates to about a 1000 grit. I used a 10 inch Sears buffing machine to apply and polish it.

I have read that some racers recommend not using a rotary buffer but hand only and only in horizontal directions, for speed.

For my decks I have only wet sanded.

After 1000 grit, then 2000 grit wet sanding, I used a buffer and 3M Finnese-It. Worked like a charm, you could watch your reflection grow out of a dull finish as you buffed.

I use an 8 inch variable speed angle grinder with a buffing wheel. Trick is not to go too fast! I start with Super Duty Rubbing Compound and finish with FinesseIt II. Colinite Wax.

Last summer I found that anything over 400 grit was too shiny for the deck! LOL

Rubbing Compound

Thanks for the advice, hadn't considered sanding at all, I'll give it a try. Finesse sounds like good stuff.

The FinesseIt II is really best for painted surfaces IMO, but it is a nice finishing touch on a proper polished surface.

Has anyone had experience with Prism Polish? A friend used it on his topsides and mast and likes it.

Prism also claims to clean up fogged plexiglass, etc. and that would be a miracle.

By the way, I apologize for the typo in the title of this thread.
