Primers

Post by heartofgold »

Tim,

I am curious as to what primers you are using on your interior beadboard. I glanced through the daysailor site and did not see a specific product mentioned.

It is really great to see such progress on the boat. Keep up the good work!

It's Interlux PreKote, the recommended primer for most of their (Interlux) topcoat paints, including the Premium Yacht Enamel (semi-gloss) that I have used throughout.

Is this the primer you use under the Bilgekote also?

I don't prime under the Bilgekote; it gets applied directly to the surface as is.

I was ready to paint the bilges with it when the instructions said that a primer must be used over epoxy. Stopped me in my tracks. I was wondering how important this step really was.
Seen any problems with this?
Thanks Tim,
Dan

Just the other day I noticed some veins of changed color in the bilgekote-painted bulkheads I replaced two years ago. Perhaps this is why.
The epoxy sat unpainted for months, so I doubt it's an issue of amine blush.
Also, a bit curious that this conflict took two years to rear its head.
hmph.

Yes, sometimes it can be a little weird over epoxy, but usually only if the epoxy is relatively fresh. Older stuff seems to not affect the paint at all...but then there's Mike's experience, so who knows.

Since you're using this product in places that aren't generally visible in the finished boat, some discoloration, if it happens shouldn't be a problem. I do know that Interlux changed Bilgekote's formulation somehow, as it is quite different now from the way it was when I first used it on Glissando in 2000. The new stuff is less good, in my opinion. But I still use it with generally good results.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it regardless, Dan.
