Broken tack attachment on Alberg 30 boom

Post by vanguard64 »

Good afternoon,
This morning, the point of attachment for the tack shackle broke off the cast aluminum fitting at the front of the boom as pictured. I am open for suggestions on how to deal with this new problem.
Thanks,
Marcelo

That boom looks in rough shape. The simple thing to do is lash the tack of the sail to the narrow spot of the boom using something like a 5/16" line or a webbing strap. If you have space to drill somewhere near the top and avoid running into the roller mechanism then you could add another shackle but that won't work so well if you are in a wide section of the boom. Another option is to drill down and tap threads for a 5/16" eyebolt and place your tack shackle there.

I've replaced several A30 booms over the years. They cost about $1k from US Spars in FL.

James,
Thanks for all the good suggestions. It is good to know that a replacement is available if need be.

This is how I ended up repairing the broken tack attachment.

That's brilliant. Thanks for sharing pictures of the fix. I was looking at that break and figured you were pretty stuck, but that solution is really well done.

Thanks for the positive comments. I was lucky to find a bail that was just the right fit where the holes lined up.
It was a Ronstan RF1045.
