Automatic Foghorn Project

I was reading a thread on the SSCA board about foghorns and one guy suggested a cheep alternative would be an old car horn, which got me thinking. Sitting around for hours pressing a button or blowing a foghorn would be really boring so how could I automate the process.

Some kind of timer circuit hooked to a relay which would apply 12vdc to the car horn would do the trick. I found this at Fry's Electronics.

Built into one of those Radio Shack project boxes with a 12v plug attached it could be plugged in and ready for use quite easily and expensively.

That would do it. Or you could go pick up any 555 timer project kits at Rat Shack that will do the same thing. Price will be within a few bucks one way or the other. Pick yer Poison.

now you just need knurled stainless timing knobs and a nice big red numeral readout with the frequency. hmmm...

Take a look at the new marine VHF's - the one I got has a whole bunch of signals pre-built into the unit - all you need is a speaker to hook up to it and it will do the rest.

Radio Shack's always a good source for stuff like this too.

I think my VHF predates all these goodies by just a year or so, but that is a good option if you are looking for a new one.
