Herreshoff Fish

Post by Quetzalsailor »

I got to sail a 1916 Herreshoff 'Fish' class boat last Saturday, at the mouth of the Sakonnet River in RI. Unfortunately, not enough wind until we arrived back at the mooring. But, what a sweet sailing little boat! Roughly 16' lwl, 21' loa, and close to 3000 lbs, marconi main and teeny jib on a boom. The owner tells us that he has sailed her to Martha's Vineyard and Newport.

I've sailed a Doughdish, too. The fiberglass version of the Herreshoff 12 1/2. Also a sweet sailing boat. Think I'll stick with the Flying Dutchman...as soon as possible again, and for as long as possible.

I bought a mid-50s FD's rudder, CB, and cotton sails. I obviously do not need the sails but they surely are beautifully made! Leathered clews, hemp boltropes. Even the spinnaker is cotton. Vreeken's Zeilmakerij, Oud-Loosdrecht, Holland. In perfect condition.
