Guess where?
Can anyone guess where these were taken? I took both from the same location one after the other. More hints available upon request.

This is fun.
Is that Mt. Desert Island in the distance?
What time of day was the first photo taken?

Re: Guess where?
Both pictures were taken within a minute of each other. It was the beginning of August at sunset so I'm guessing that it was somewhere around 7:30pm or so. Mount Desert is not in the background of the first picture. I agree, this is fun :)

Re: Guess where?
I would say that it's in that general area, although it's not an island (or group of islands I should say) in or near the channel itself.Tim wrote:Muscle Ridge area?

Barred Islands? The second photo is throwing me and looks more like the outer island at Seal Bay...

Re: Guess where?
Not the Barred Islands, although they are lovely. Seal Bay is truly spectacular and I think that this tiny harbor reminded me of it somewhat. It was a gem that we discovered last season. I'll give two big hints...it took us less than two hours to sail there from Rockland and it's less than six miles as the crow flies from Seal Bay (or at least the Seal Bay I think you are referring too).

Re: Guess where?
I've never actually anchored there, though I've been by a number of times on my way elsewhere. I love Hurricane Sound and environs.

I agree, that whole area is amazing. It's the raw material I use for winter dreams. We hit Brimstone Island around the corner last year too. What a funky place that is.

It is indeed a beautiful spot. What are those hills in the distance?

It certainly plants an image to help last through the winter.

Tim,
Have you ever been to The Basin in Hurricane Sound? It looks like quite the adventure to get in there.

Re: Guess where?
The Basin that I know is the one in Phippsburg, Maine. Its right in my home waters.
I had to look up where the Basin was in Hurricane sound. It's at Vinalhaven Island. I've gone thru nasty entrances but that one gives me the shakes. I'll have to see it in person to be able to say whether I can get in or not in a boat over 25 feet - especially in a sailboat. I've got lots of experience going thru difficult areas (sometimes had to push thru mud...) but doing that in a sailboat really gives me the shakes.

Re: Guess where?
The best chart to look at is 13308, Fox Islands Thorofare. This shows the entrance in much greater detail than 13305.
I've taken the boat in as far as the 25' spot just west of the entrance, purely for reconnaissance. The entrance is daunting, but as usual, seeing things in person provides better perspective than just looking at a small-scale chart. Still, we didn't go in. Maybe someday...

Re: Guess where?
Well, it looks like we've picked the location for next year's Plastic Classic Forum Maine rendezvous.
