Boat footwear

What do you wear on your feet on the boat, particularly when sailing? Anyone figured out the best solution for this?
I haven't quite found the right thing yet. I've banged my feet coming in and out of the companion way enough and seen a few vids of broken toes that I really need to give up my habit of being barefoot, even though that feels the best and most natural.
And with that, how to do you keep your boat clean from foot prints, dirt trod onto the boat? Found it quite hard this summer coming off the dinghy with shore shoes and tracking mud. Hoping to have cockpit cushions next year and going to have to get into the habit of being cleaner in what I tolerate and where I allow myself to all walk.

I like the Topsider style shoes, but have found that a "water shoe"/river sandals works better in the long run. They dry quicker, stand up to abuse better, and don't rot. Teva and Chaco's seem to be the brands that I gravitate towards.
