Good Sources for Recoring Project Materials?

Post by crufone »

Hello all,
Where are some of the best (read reasonably priced) places to purchase 1) Balsa coring, 2) Epoxy Resins, 3) Biaxial Fiberglass cloth, 4) Fairing/finishing coumpounds , 5) Deck paints? I am located in Ft. Myers,FL. Thank you for letting me in on your favorite sources.
BTW I just discovered this forum recently and am truly amazed with the wealth of experience and information being disseminated. Bless Tim for his efforts, our boats are the ultimate benefactors.

I live in Brooksville, FL and have to buy a lot of my materials online because there is not much around here. You are probably better off in your area with all of the boating in Charlotte Harbor (which by the way I come down there to sail frequently I love your area). There is one place that is about 1-1/2 hrs south of me and probably 1-1/2 hours north of you that has a pretty good supply of materials. This is their website.

I also buy a lot from Jamestown Distributors at this website.

And my biax and cloth I usually buy here.

Hope this helps some. What kind of boat do you have and how extensive of a project are you planning?

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for the references. I was assuming that I would have to order materials on-line or mail order. I really have not noticed coring being offered for sale in cataloques. Marine Surplus in town only has 3/4" balsa coring. This biaxial cloth is something Tim mentioned as good to use for relaminating back the outer skin.
My first project will be the foredeck and side decks back to the cockpit on a CD Typhoon. Next will be the aft deck on the same boat, then some of the cockpit sole.
After that next year will be the side decks and coach roof of a 1966 Seafarer 23, Kestrel model.

While I'm restoring my commander I have a friend that sails a Cape Dory Typhoon and he takes me sailing at least once a month so I can get a sailing fix. Nice boat and I'm glad to hear another one is being maintained.

Best of luck on your project.

I have sourced fasteners, metal, and composites from these folks. They do not seem to mind small accounts and the shipping is fast. Their total inventory is quite mind-boggling...
