Suncor stainless

Post by barrybrown »

F.W.I.W.
Suncor is just up the street from me, I have their catalog but have never found a good source for their products. I ran across this company on e-bay, they carry the full line at discount. Don't know much about them but placed an order last night and talked to someone on the phone this morning.

I like the look of the products in the catalog and the prices are reasonable.

might try bob L here on the board or at bennett brother yachts for suncor products. I read over good old boats tests of these vs sta lock and norseman. Norseman faired poorly whereas stalok and suncorp tested out equally well on breaking strenght with a nudge to suncorp for ease of use.

I don't currently have a subscription to Good Old Boat, so I haven't read that review. Would you mind recalling the gist of why Norseman fared poorly?

http://www.bosunsupplies.com/goodoldboatquickattach.cfm - Good old boat article.

A local chandlery stocks suncor. http://www.acemarinerigging.com/

I'll let yo know on pricing, as it's a coincidence... today I found that article and put together a list of stuff to get pricing on. Evidently suncor doesn't do pricesheets, as stainless spot prices jump around... Wacky.

Ace said that QMH stocks a lot of the same stuff at better prices... http://www.qmharchitectural.com/ They have swageless terminals that look identical in the catalog, aside from the branding, as suncor.

Here's QMH's swageless terminals: http://www.qmh-inc.com/cat10.asp

I'm thinking the quick connect joiner is pretty slick as a spare... but I don't know if the QMH stuff is made by the same folks as Suncor, thinking they both are importer/distributors and less of manufacturers... but don't know for sure.

Thanks for the article link. Funny thing is, I actually did have a subscription to Good Old Boat back when this article was written (2000), and I remember reading it then. Based on what they said in the article, I don't think I'd write off Norseman without doing a bit more (and more current) research.

That's not to say that everyone should have to run out and research Norseman of course - and who wants to have even the slightest doubt about their rigging. They had problems with 100% of the Norseman fittings they tried, which sounds bad. But on the other hand the sample size was 2 fittings, and it was ten years ago.

Hear ya there... Norseman has the name.

Forgot, the one that Ace had on the shelf was this brand: http://bluewave.dk/
Look identical in blue prints... I'll give suncor and QMH a call tomorrow and see if they will spill who makes them.

Yeah nice thing about the article, iIRC i think even the writer acknowledged the skewing due to small data set. gotta love good old boat. He does it scientifically and acknowledge the shortcomings of his research process. Wouldnt it be nice if everyone did that. I really need to invest in those cds!

Zach, I think in the GOB article they did mention something about Suncor and Bluewave having a link (although I was reading more for the Norseman info so I skimmed over it).

I was happy with the prices at highland rigging, don't yet know about the service. They appear to be an outlet for Suncor products.

As for rigging terminals, i just finished making up new wires and used Castloc terminals, its hard to beat them for both strength and especially price. The other benefit is that they don't allow water to enter the fitting.
