price of teak boards....in line or crazy??

I have a client who has 4 teak boards. 14" wide, about 8 feet long and a bit shy of an inch thick.

She brought them over from Bali in a shipping container with a ton of other stuff she sells.

She mention $200 a board.

I have NO idea if that is insane or realistic...any input???

Thats about $22 per brd/ft. Vienna Hardwoods in Northern Virginia has teak for about $15 per brd/ft. Exotic Lumber in Annapolis has select teak for marine use at about $26 per brd/ft, if I remember correctly. These prices are usually based on boards of around 8" widths. Anything about 14" wide sell for a premium and should go for a few more bucks per board foot because they are valuable to people looking to make wide solid panels or veneer sections.

The type of saw cut, and amount of figure in the boards might make them more valuable, as well.

Last teak I priced was about $22 dollars a board foot. What she has is over 8 board feet, so if it's good teak and not junk, yeah- that's ballpark. At least it isn't outrageous for teak.

If it is just under an inch thick I would think it is already planed. A proper piece of 4/4 teak should dress out to about 7/8" when smooth both sides. That it is already planed means it may be a bit cupped now. If this is so its value drops a lot as you would have to rip it down to salvage the material. Hopefully it has been stored flat and is in good shape.

Teak whole sales for about $17-18 per board foot and retails for $22 or better in the north east. It seems she is asking full retail, so I would offer a bit less, and only if the pieces are in good shape.

Thanks for the info. I am going to inspect all 4 pieces on saturday.

I don't have a huge need for it yet, but if I can get it for the right priuce it will be worth stockpiling for the inevitable!

Teak update....

Some weird wood!!!

18.5 inches WIDE!!!!!

8.5 feet long

and 3/4 inch thick, un planed...so I'd guess you might get .5 inch out of it once you were done finishing.

Not thick enough for coaming boards!!

But what an impressive sight and 18.5 inch wide slab of teak....

I passed.

And only if the boards weren't cupped at all. Not much I can think of to use them for. I would pass too.
