Remote Oil Filter?

Post by dkall »

Has anyone moved an oil filter? Mine is rather a pain to get it on and off and I was wondering what the down side was to mounting it "off the engine", if there is any.

I've looked for some kits and can't find any listed.

Thanks

I plan on installing a remote oil filter system in my next boat. I'm so fed up with horizontal oil filters and the related mess, as well as the difficulty of access of these critical items.

Here's a link to a pretty thorough description of installing one of these systems on a Sabre 34. He has sources listed for his equipment.

You can do a Google search for remote oil filter and you'll find a lot of them, mainly automotive, which will work just as well as anything called marine. The $190 Early Light paid for his kit was really on the high side.

$190 is nuthin... I found an Amsoil "Marine" remote oil filter and bypass system for $460!!!!! http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/bmk18.aspx

I'm looking to do this as well in the next few weeks. From what I've found so far, it is probably easiest to get the cap piece for where your existing filter is, and the remote assembly, but plan on making up your own hoses out of marine grade fuel hose to be CG compliant.

Doing a quick search for a Honda remote filter adaptor (which has the same filter as my 2GMF) I came up with this one.
I wonder if it would work? If the filters are the same it should bolt on, but could the oil passages/paths be different?
Obviously I need to do some more research!

Calling Foley Marine http://www.foleyengines.com/home.html and got one from them. Not the cheapest but not the priciest. They deal in Perkins engines and said this is the same system the military uses and they've never had a failure. Don't really want to take any chances on this part screwing up. Will upday ya all once I get it and install it on how it goes. I'm hoping it will make changing the oil "fun". :)

I just ordered one from Trans Atlantic Diesel http://www.tadiesels.com although they don't have it on their web site. I have to say, it was cheaper than I expected, but a little more expensive that what I came up with myself-- except the TAD one saves me moocho hassle.
