Fairing with thickened epoxy.

Post by Alloftrees »

I am in the process of fairing The topside of my hull and am curious as to how thick I can put on thickened epoxy before it is unstable?? As mentioned the workmanship on these Alberg 30s wasn’t the best. The front of my bow isn’t even a straight vertical line when looking at it head on so I planned on using thickened epoxy (colloidal silica) to straighten it out. . It could potentially be 1/2” or 5/8” thick in spots. I will also be using fairing filler afterwards but very minimally. Thanks in advance

If I would be actually adding shape, I would be including actual glass in the build up the area first and then fairing once I was really close. Epoxy is strong, but has no interlocking properties. Consider that that area might get bumped, you want the area not to be able to chip out. There should be glass providing the strength. At least this is the way I have and would work on solving the problem you describe.
