Barrier coat question.

Post by smcgrath67 »

I'm unclear on this: I have finished recoring areas on my deck, and I consider them faired and ready for finish. Do I need a barrier coat before applying primer? I'm using Total Boat epoxy primer.
Thanks!

I don't use barrier coats such as Interprotect 2000e on deck unless I have a special issue like gelcoat crazing I want to seal with a hard coating. Sometimes I use to to seal a single component paint before applying the epoxy primers and two part paints in the hope it won't lift the original finish. That sometimes works but not always so it's safer to strip the old finish entirely in that case.
