Replacing Chris Craft runabout deck planks

Post by Dave M »

Dear phpbb,

I am about to refasten the original pin striped deck planks on my 1938 CC runabout. I have coated the frames, new baten boards and the underside of the planks with Petit sealer. Do I need to bed the planks with any compound at installation? Next question, Are all finish coats of varnish put on the decks before the seam compound is applied to the grooves?

I don't think you need to bed the planks on the beams, but you could probably use Dolfinite or similar bedding compound. Or anything else you wanted. Using an adhesive caulk or some such might firm up the whole structure, but isn't necessary.

I would varnish after installing and filling the seams. You want to make sure the seam compound sticks to raw wood.
