Re: Alternatives to the Pearson Ensign?

I'd take issue that the Sparkman and Stephens designed Rainbow isn't a plastic classic. They sail sweetly, have huge cockpits, tough as nails, near zero maintenance. They got almost no maintenance at the annapolis sailing school, I routinely saw them run aground (cast iron unfiberglassed keels) run ...

Re: Broken portlight dogs

I wouldn't say I am versed in it...I just started buying metal working tools...

And just like buying a guitar doesn't make one a musician, buying a milling machine doesn't make you a machinists.

But its fun and I think it is good to expose the kids to it!!

We made a little cannon this afternoon!!!

I tell you there is sooooo much to learn with the milling and lathe operations. I've only recently picked this up as a "hobby" and am having a good time. It is neat being able to crank out a bracket or something when you need to. Offer stands for anyone here. As long as it is relatively si...

Re: Broken portlight dogs

I've got the lathe with threading capabilities....you have the bronze rod? That or we could mill an appropriate sized upper part that would allow you to slip a stainless steel bolt in and pin it with the roll pin. Got a tool for that too!!! I don't have the material, so you'd have to procure some, b...

Re: Broken portlight dogs

So why not get a longer SS bolt.

Cut the shank to length and drill across it for the roll pin, then cut the threaded section to an appropriate length.

Get a SS wingnut and roll with it!

I can do that for you fairly easily if you have a problem.

The 6 volts seemed to never hold a decent charge. Autohelm / gps would pull them down as well as radio (FM/ ipod) by day and then anchor out and next day they would be way down. Just didn't seem to do what I thought they should. See the early post that details the 6 volts I had been using. thanks!!!!!

Some of the guys I used to race with when I was a kid raced on Satan's Mercy which sank in that race...probably early 80's.

They all were so complementary to the Bermudians and how they were treated.

Ignore them...they do not matter. Prep it, paint it, stick it in the water. Go back to sailing. You can turn this into a big old n...
