I though you guys would find these measurements I took interesting: Total thickness of a 1" Apollo bronze through hull = 2.99mm http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/image/91572913.jpg Now subtract the depth of the treads cut into it @ 1.45mm deep http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/image/91572914....

Believe it or not..

Believe it or not Tim even with a photo there are a few out there still arguing that it's safe and even going so far to suggest re-cutting the threads on a thru-hull fitting to NPT..?? The lengths to which some will go to save a penny is rather funny..!

here's how it looks.

Beware that most through hull fitting threads are likely to be straight thread, not tapered; a lot of the standard pipe fittings have tapered threads and won't thread down sufficiently before binding. This may make your installation more of a challenge than you hoped for! I've seen a lot of straigh...

Steering Pedestal Upgrade

Hi All, We bought a CS-36 earlier this season and it has a cockpit mounted main sheet traveler right in front of the pedestal. I did not want to switch to mid boom sheeting and therefore could not install an offset pedestal guard with Navpod's for the instruments. After giving this quite a bit of th...

Where has common sense gone??

Last night, July 7th, we were anchored in a beautiful and idyllic Maine cove with only four other boats. Each boat had plenty of room to swing, even a 53 footer, and there was room enough for at least eight or ten more boats. About 7:45 p.m. a very salty, but ragged looking Pearson Triton entered th...

Hi All, I thought I would let you all know that I have discovered, the expensive way, that you should never use PB Blaster near ANY engine or transmission seals. She floats but I took a gamble and lost. I did not like the through-hull installation with the valves screwed onto through-hulls but figured they would be fine. I did honestly think, and figured, they were probably alright for one more season and I gambled wrong. We sailed the boat up from Portsmout...

The problem with polyester

paints is exactly that! Once you buff it you're a slave to it. As Awlgrip cures it forms a hard outer protective skin roughly 1 mil thick and if you buff through it you've lost most of the benefits of having Awlgrip. The reason I like acrylics is because the hard shell is the entire 2.5 - 3.0 mils o...

Why I like acrylic LPU paints !!

I helped a friend buff his 17 year old, fire engine red Imron on his Ericson 35-3 and it came out amazing! You can't do this with Awlgrip or polyester LPU paints but you can with Awlcraft 2000 or Imron acrylic LPU paints! The pictures below were taken before wax but after compounding & polishing...
