I installed a permanently mounted 12 volt oil change pump on my Westerbeke 27 about 7 years ago for approx $90.

Here in Solomons, MD we dodged a bullet as far as Sandy is concerned. We had 60 kt. winds and 3 ft. chop in the harbor and the tidal surge was only about 3 feet.. I had Early Light on the hard and prepared for winter storage. We were lucky!

The HMS Bounty went down approximately 140 miles SE of Cape Hatteras, NC. Fourteen crew members were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. One female crew member was recovered and subsequently has passed and the skipper is still missing.

Are there any other openings that could let water in? If so you might be better off to drill a drainage hole or two at the base of the mast so it can drain.

You could re-install the masthead with caulk (4200 or similar). You could also have the masthead welded to the extrusion.

Thursday's Child looks great in your video. I just noticed that you sail on Carlyle Lake. I had the pleasure of sailing my Rhodes Bantam in the RB International Regatta with my 10 year old daughter as crew at Carlyle in the late 1970s. Many fond memories!

Dennis,
I added an electric oil change pump to my Westerbeke 27 and now get all but about 6 ounces of oil out when I do an oil change, and with no mess Total cost for this upgrade was around $90.

I didn't mean to switch from brand to brand when I mentioning two different brands,. I agree with Paulus for th reasons he states, pick a quality brand and stick with it. I had one boat in which I used nothing but Castrol and my current boat has had nothing but Shell Rotella in it.

I have always used Shell Rotella or Castrol Diesel oils in both Universal (Kabota block) or Westerbeke (Mitsubishi block) diesels. No adverse issues with either oil.

You may wish to install the Garboard Drain from the outside. If you are talking about insulating behind hull ceilings, I did that on my 1982 Sabre 34. I used bubble wrap style of insulation that has a foil face on both sides. You can see this project documented on my web site here: http://earlylight160.110mb.com/HullCeilings.html

I painted the deck and cabin top on my previous boat using Interlux Interthane Plus (the predecessor to the Interlux Perfection) I added flattening agent to the non-skid areas but left the remainder glossy. Glare was never a problem and the gloss made cleaning much easier. Good luck!

Have you given any consideration of laminating some FRP from McMaster Carr? You will never have to worry about rot. Just my 02 cents worth.
