The first cruising log I tried to read through was just too painful. I skimmed for highlights. The fact that the vehicle in question was a McGregor should be a tip off. They attract a certain type of sail.....er..... boater. Oops! have I become an opinionated snob? Someone slap me. The beauty of bei...

I would say you are right about the price. It looks like someone has put a lot of time into her. Unfortunately, it is also out of my price range. I am hoping that after a few years of ownership my next boat will look like that but I am forced to start with something a little plainer. I like the idea...

Thanks Tim, I will try that. So much to learn, so little time... I spent most of the day chasing leads on the 5/4 fir I need. No one seems to have it anymore. I thought I would substitute but one yard worker seemed to think I would be better off being persistent and sticky with fir. I guess next Sat...

Aha, Well at least I feel better thinking I have learned the problem. I am off for some discriminating lumber shopping this morning. So, Tim, are you recomending adding a thickener to the epoxy mix when laminating? I was just using straight West System out of the can(s). The strips seemed to pull up...

I thought the Nutshell would be a good, useful, project that could be completed over the winter months before I started on the big boat in the spring... In searching around on the web I found very few builders of Nutshells that had problems with the frame. I am thinking it is a weird issue with the ...

Laminating Goof
Hi all, I haven't laminated much with epoxy before, so this one caught me for surprise. Maybe someone out there can tell me what I did wrong. I was laminating strips of fir for a center frame in a Nutshell pram. I coated both sides of the strips with West System epoxy and clamped them around the for...

I spoke with the seller but I didn't try to convince him of the boat's true worth. That would probably be futile and just hurt the owner's feelings. I got the package from the surveyor this weekend. If one could negotiate a reasonable price the boat would make a great project. I am not sure if the b...

Cracked frames no problem
Hi Tim, Congratulations on the Lyman. Wooden boat restoration is indeed the height of folly but at least you are showing good taste... and you are in great company! If you are planning on removing the sidedecks then I imagine the cracked frames should be no problem. I haven't done much wooden boat w...

Thanks for the sympathy Tim. My thinking leading up to the survey was that I already knew the boat type and had formed opinions about it so that if a qualified surveyor could find nothing out of the ordinary then I would buy the boat sight unseen. The logic being that the impartial professional surv...

The bid is up to 51 dollars but the auction is still open for another five days. There is probably a couple hundred dollars (optimistic guess) worth of spare parts if one wanted to take the trouble and part it out. ;-) Is it my eyes or has the rear jackstand deformed the hull. I have only seen that ...

I got two phone calls from the surveyor today. The first asked if the boat was really where I said it was as no one could find it! The second came fifteen minutes later asking me if I had seen the boat for myself. I hadn't as I live in Boston and the boat is in Michigan. It took the surveyor ten min...

The earlier A30's had masonite but they later went to edge grained balsa. I suppose to expect no delamination or water damage is a bit unrealistic from a 39 year old boat. I will post a reply again when I found out just how bad it is. Hey, maybe the good price just got better! I just reread Tim's re...

Thanks, You guys just validated my thoughts too. The survey is already scheduled so I think I will go through with it. If it looks good then I will probably wait for a thaw and have the surveryor take a second look for water damage which he has already offered at no extra charge. I should have been ...

Value of a moisture test in a survey
Hello Tim, et al. I just might have found an Alberg 30 that I could bring home for my next project but the surveyor I contacted brought up a point I had not considered. The boat in question is in Michigan and there is no way to do a moisture test while the temperatures remain below freezing. How val...

Hi Heidi, We didn't meet when I was invited up by your husband a couple weeks ago and I definitely feel the less because of it. I distinctly remember Tim telling me that the barn was actually YOUR idea. Seems he had the dreams but not the guts to actually go ahead and build it. As he tells it, it wa...

Wow!... Thanks Tim. An invitation to see Glissando and company real, live, and in person. After following the project it would be like meeting a celebrity. I would love to take a look and I will contact you REAL SOON. I only ask that you don't convince me to take on a similar project. I dream excess...

When I did an abreviated web search for the A29 I found your website with more photos. I miss the west coast... But about the boat. The '29 definitely shows the extra beaminess. Are you familiar with the A30's sailing qualities and how they would compare with the A29. I am not sure if C. Alberg ever...

Alberg 30's and Triton's
Following the Gllissando project over the last couple of years definitely got me thinking about finding my own Alberg designed boat. What sort of differences would I find between the Alberg 30 and Pearson Triton? (yeah I know... about two feet!).
Thanks,
Britton
Thanks,
