My brother's dinghy oars were lost in the nearly hurricane force winds that trashed the middle Cheasapeake this fall. So, we set off to copy the set of traditional oars I made for my dinghy when I acquired her last spring. Shaping: http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h127/triton114/oars1.jpg Finishing...

John, I got these burners from Force 10 Marine, but they don't carry them anymore. I was also restoring one of their old kerosene bulkhead heaters last winter at the same time and they informed me that they would be droping the burners from their supply. I do know that they are still available for a...

I'm a bit of embarrassed to talk about the awning. Feel free to laugh about it (I know my neighbors do). The awning is a 10 X 20 unit that I got at Cosco for about $190. It has sides and ends designed to make it into a temporary garage of sorts. Of course the end pieces are pretty worthless on a 28....

I had planned on building the profile in wood and glassing it in place. Is this a bad idea? I considered that idea in the planning phase of the project. The more I thought of it though, the more it seemed like the woodworking for these would be more difficult than building molds. I made all four mo...

Roughly where are the fore and aft ends of your lids? In hindsight, might they have been better a few inches this way or that? Well, I think I put a private message into Tim to get the measurements on his seat lockers thinking that Pearson would know better than I would. Mine are pretty close in si...

Bad Smelling Water
The water from the poly tank on our CAL 27 is absolutely the nastiest smelling stuff imaginable. I need to kill the bacteria in the tank and lines. Is it acceptable to flush the system with bleach diluted with water, or do I need to go with the $25/gal stuff they sell at West Marine? If bleach, what...

Britton, No, unfortunately I haven't been working on the inside of the boat at all. It gets pretty hot over my driveway in July and August, so I have been working on the exterior, and not very much at that since I purchased the CAL 27. We took some time to go sailing over the last couple of months, ...

Tim I'd carefully consider just keeping that Fatty Knees I doubt anyone else in my family will go for a different dinghy or allow me to sell it. Even the dog loves it! Still, I need some justification for building a small boat from scratch. I guess two dinghies though would be just fine. As you have...

A Couple of Boats Added to Our Fleet
I have had the my Triton now exactly 2 years. I would guess that I am unfortunately only about 1/3 of the way through the project, though almost all of the structural work is complete. With our boys growing up faster than we would like, my wife and I decided to purchase an interim boat that would me...

Tim, A couple of questions about the process: 1: How far below the hull/deck joint do these pieces extend? Did you fill the gaps between the hull/deck joint before application of the rail sections, or is the cualk enough to protect the joint from water intrusion? 2. If the rail sections conformed to...

Rachel, Yep! Your right. These pictures were taken back in the Fall of last year when I went to pick up my Brother's boat after a refit there. Triton Rubrail Design
I?d like to solicit some opinions on rubrail designs for a Triton. Right now, my current plan is for only a rubrail, though I have thought of also adding a caprail as well. The toerail on Glissando is absolutely stunning, and represents the ideal to me, but I think I need to be practical about the t...

I think if one were looking to make a small wooden component on a boat to maximum strength, then riving (splitting) the part from raw timber would be a possibility. Prior to the last century, many high strength items such as tool handles, wagon wheel spokes, barrel staves, chair spindles all where m...

Well, Mine seems OK in that respect. I have been laying out the height of my berths there also. I spent last week altering the chain locker bulkhead and I ached everywhere from standing, squating, and sitting in the empty expanse of what was once the vberth. I miss the level area to work on, but I h...

I don't know what if these are helpfull, but the Triton rig dimensions are here with other Pearsons:
http://www.baconsails.com/database/boatspec.php
I have a main, 150 and 110 in my basement that I can measure for you, but it will be after I get back from my next trip at work.

Brrrr!
12" and counting. New England will get much more, I am sure!
Deck work will be on hold for a while longer.

Tim, The boats do not look like they're squatting if the waterline is corrected appropriately (and this doesn't mean just raising the after portion, as is often seen). Just to clarify, are you saying the proper way to counter the squat is to trim the hull as discussed in the post about Triton berths...
