There is one good basic book that might help you. I grew up with this book... It's Field Guide to Sailboats of North America . Its by Richard M. Sherwood, at least for the dog chewed version I have (NOT dog-eared, literally munched on). This book isn't really 100% accurate, I found some errors in it...

If you're a cheapskate... just triple up the cinderblocks and put some good 1/4" chains thru them and you're in business! That's certainly good enough, really. No sense blowing your cash on a mushroom anchor, really. Unless you can pick one up used at a really, really low price. You're better o...

Congrat's on your new to you Santana 22. If I lived on the West Coast, the Santana 22 would be at the top of the list of small sailboats that I would buy. You'll end up sailing this boat much more than your neighbor's Catalina 30. 30 feet is way too big for that lake. It will be boring to sail as co...

Actually... Hamilton Marine had a sale last week. It ended last Sunday. I think they probably was overwhelmed just like Defender so hence your "upgrade." An electric Lavac sure is a nice upgrade! As far I know (could be wrong), they don't consume that much electricity. After all, you only ...

"Like those key chain floats." That is the general feeling I get from everybody so far in this forum. Ughh. I don't really like that kind of cushions myself. Good thing I asked. The old cushions I have is made of very nice leather - lookalike vinyl material that's off white colored (intent...

After thinking on it a little more... To save on $$, perhaps its better to skip the paint job on the mast. Just put something on the repaired areas to protect it from potential corrosion after you get the mast back from the repair shop. It might be ugly as hell but it will do until you get the boat ...

If it was competely cosmetic, I would tell you to just paint the mast yourself. But the needed repairs to the mast... Unless you are comfortable with doing some repairs to the mast yourself, I would think its better to let them to do it. And after the repairs, it is usually best to paint as soon as ...

FIZZ , the family daysailer, needs new wires badly. Only one light out of 5 works and that sole working light is in the cabin! FIZZ is a 1978 C.E. Ryder Sea Sprite 23 so she has for both better and worse, a full liner in the interior. Most of the wires goes thru behind the cabin liner so... Could a...

I should have said it in my orginal message but don't use it to remove the dust on whatever you are varnishing or painting. As Tim said, the car duster does have waxy substances on the surfaces which helps it to suck up dust. This may leave some residues on the surface that may ruin your painting/va...

Let me tell you something about me: I am a major boat nut. And I am also a major car nut. Possibly the worst affliction there is in the world... How about Teak Cockpit Grating? Do your repairs then put a teak grating above the cockpit floor. Gives it a nice finished look! Unless I am wrong, from photographs of the Allied Princess Ketch, it seems that the mizzen mast is set on the cockpit floor just behind the bridgedeck. If that is the case,...

Hmm... Dam. Never thought of that. Could be the case. Often, in the case of sucessful designs which the Ensign certainly was, molds get used up and new molds are made. The first time I saw the photographs of the Jolly Roger out of the water, I immediately recongized it as an Ensign (or Electra) but the transom and cabin threw me off. Sorry man about that whisker pole. I am not sure if it is worth it to repair it... Perhaps you should try to see if you can straighten out the outer tube first before deciding to spend money on a new tube or a whole new whisker pole. If the outer tube is shot, then its all shot. Tim, I looked carefully at the pictures of the Triton Daysailer and I love it very much. It's very beautiful. I have to agree totally with Clint. I used Pettit Hydrocoat green on FIZZ, my Sea Sprite 23 # 652 and it went very smoothly. My Sea Sprite 23 has no boom vang at all. I intend to install a boom vang, a Schaefer 4:1 tackle which I bought cheap at Defender.com. Yes, the set up is similar to what you have said. No bearings at all other than a plastic bearing at the very bottom of the rudder. It is a solid bronze rudderpost thru a fiberglass tube. I did think about the possiblity of the rudderpost bent but it looks straight and the effort of turn is the same...

Stiff Rudder

My Sea Sprite 23 has a stiff rudder. The boat has been well cared for by its previous owner but the rudder seems to have never been greased for the last 10 years. It is stiff. I have tried to grease it and used WD-40, pentrating oil and so on and nothing works. I was only able to loosen it slightly....
