Forum goes beyond on-line advice
Tim and Zach, On a recent trip to Beaufort, NC I connected with one of our on-line participants. I would like to thank Zach Eakes for spending several hours after work one day last week demonstrating recoring materials and techniques to me. Zach went way beyond what could be expected to help me beco...

Best way to cut Scrimmed Balsa coring to shape?
If I want to cut my balsa coring to specific shapes to recore my deck what is the best method so that I do not mess up the scrim backing? Also Tim mentioned 'washing' prior to adding more epoxy/glass laminates. Washing with what? soap and water to remove the amine blush or some type of solvent to pr...

Re: Good Sources for Recoring Project Materials?
Hi Jerry, Thanks for the references. I was assuming that I would have to order materials on-line or mail order. I really have not noticed coring being offered for sale in cataloques. Marine Surplus in town only has 3/4" balsa coring. This biaxial cloth is something Tim mentioned as good to use f...

Re: Reuse or replace outer skin after recoring
Thanks for the reference to the #1708 biaxial cloth. What are your thoughts about the use of foam coring vs balsa. I may have some foam coring to use for this job. If I am to recore only portions of the deck should I not mix different coring materials on the same deck section? Perhaps it really does...

Re: Reuse or replace outer skin after recoring
Tim, I was hoping that you might chime in. I believe that the non-skid on the Typhoon is just built up of layers of paint, it definately does not have any pattern. Surrounding the non-skid area is a border of flat surface about 3" wide. In the middle of this flat area is where I was planning to...

Reuse or replace outer skin after recoring
Some folks have told me to remove the entire foredeck skin in one piece prior to removing and replacing the rotten core material. The idea being that you can perserve the non-skid and can save on materials. The boat is a Typhoon and the entire foredeck is about 35 sq.ft. If I can get the skin off in...

Re: General recoring questions
Thanks for your thoughtfully replys. I am slowly formulating a plan for the recoring. First I will build framing inside to support the deck when the outer skin and core are removed. This should not be too tough because the Typhoon is small and there is not much in the way of the needed framing. Sinc...

General recoring questions
Hello all, I have several recoring projects ahead of me and will start with the smallest, the foredeck of a CD Typhoon Weekender. Why not just remove the coring and replace with a hand layed up fibreglass matt/cloth layering system? This can't be more than 30sq ft. so how much more can a solid build...
