Re: Finnish "Bay Boat" from the 50's

Thanks! I'm remembering more as I look at the picture. We kept her moored behind the house. We had a dingy but i would usually just swim out, it was easy to climb aboard on the overhung rudder. There were no winches at all. Notice, no main traveler, the main sheet is a pully system off the end of th...

Finnish "Bay Boat" from the 50's

Came across a picture of my first boat. Well, it was really the family boat but I sailed every day in the summers and I think my Dad got to sail her three or four times during the three years we lived in Finland. Called a Bay Boat she was 23', full keel with a nice little cabin. I have fond memories...

Re: Home made tool

Thank's for the link, haddn't seen that one. The Cub is also a fat little rule-bender. She's 28.5 LOA, 21' LWL with a 9' beam: http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo36/Drt_Boy/Tiger%20Cub/2-19-09firstsolosail5.jpg All that overhang really increases LWL when she's healed, even just a little. I've been...

Re: Home made tool

Seems to me that Tiger Cub is one of Charley Morgan's famous and successful boats from the mid '60s. I'll step a little further out on a spreader...doesn't she have a steel tube space frame inside her hull? She is one of Charley's early designs and her sistership, "Ginger," achived local ...

Re: Home made tool

"Good use of the greatest neolithic tools, the human brain and a stick." That is the best comment, by far, from anyone (it's on a few other forums, too) and made me think .......... damn you: you made me think! Our crow's seem to like it: http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo36/Drt_Boy/Tig...

Home made tool

One thing has been bugging us since we bought her in February, the windvane was bent down: http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo36/Drt_Boy/Tiger%20Cub/A-Thewayitwas.jpg Had an old spreader: http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo36/Drt_Boy/Tiger%20Cub/B-OldspreaderIhadlyingaround.jpg Drilled a few hol...

Re: Installing new spreaders

Just wanted to say thanks, we got the job done Wednesday afternoon (man it was HOT!) and the spreaders look great. My friend Norm went up the mast and put the spreader in place. I went to my neighbors dock and eyeballed the outboard angle of spreader and shroud, Norm then drilled the holes, bolted t...

Re: Installing new spreaders

Thank's Tim ..... I was actually making the job a lot more complicated than it really is. Now it's just getting it done.

Installing new spreaders

Am asking advice on setting the proper angle on new spreaders. The old spreaders look like they've been shaped at the mast end to angle slightly upward. I understand the angle on either side of the outside of the spreader and the shroud should be equal. Here is a side view of one of the old spreader...

Re: Newbie with a small project

Yeah, it's the angle ......... had to hold the camera to hide unsightly bathroom stains! Bob, my friend who made them, made sure I noticed one side was flat and the other a little rounded. Rounded side up so rain water won't pool. Spreaders will be ready in a few days but I'm going to be gone for a ...

Re: Newbie with a small project

I've got a few coats of Cetol on at this point and plan to end up with 8 or 9 coats before they're ready. I've been asking around and many people suggest painting the top of the spreaders white, for better UV protection. Think I'll look for some "aluminized" paint; better UV protection and...

Re: Newbie with a small project

I do have a few pictures! First sail. The first few sails were out into the intercoastal, it's kind of narrow in my area so a lot of tacking required. These were taken behind the house: http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo36/Drt_Boy/2-19-09firstsolosail1.jpg http://i359.photobucket.com/albums/oo36/...

Newbie with a small project

Hi, I'm a "re-entry" sailor; sold my last boat in '95. It was a Westerly Padgent 23'. A little slow to weather but very comfortable and seaworthy. The shallow draft bilge keels were great for Florida waters but you don't want to run aground on an outgoing tide ..... learned that the first ...
