Re: Need help with finish work material
Have you tried painters tape on both surfaces leaving a consistant gap between them? Apply caulk, smooth with tool or finger, then remove the tape. This makes caulking much more consistant and managible.

Re: Securing Bungs
I've had good luck removing bungs by driving in a self taping screw (by hand) in the center of the bung. The new screw only goes in as far as it takes to hit the old screw, stops advancing, and lifts the bung right out. Often it pops out in one piece. Quick and easy.

I move one at a time briefly each year to do bottom maintenance. The first time I did it I was really nervous. If it makes you nervous you can rig a temporary support or even better try to find used stands that are the right size and sell or trade yours.

Replacing bulkhead with limited access to one side
Our new to us Ericson 35 came with a rotted bulkhead forward of the V berth. I have removed the deck mounted anchor locker tub/bin that sits directly over part of the bulkhead. This has given me great access to all the deck hardware in that area and I plan to remove and rebed it all while I have the...

Re: Cetol or Varnish?......
I dont care for the original Cetol but I like the Natural Teak. I think it is easy to apply (I have had good luck without sanding between coats) and while it stays fairly soft, it is very easy to spot repair. I know it doesnt look as traditional as the deep (10 plus coats) varnish but I think it has...

This is for the 23ST, Its not the exact same winch but I think it is close...try this link. If the link doesn't work, it's from the Ericson owners website.

Hi Ric,
I am always up for a daysail. I am in South Portland on Casco Bay. You didn't mention when you will be coming through, but let me know.

I have enjoyed Earlylight's website often. You have done a great job with her. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Re: Jibsheet Blocks and other stuff
Another rookie question.. What is the proper setup for an outhaul? I have a block at the end of the boom and a cleat for it, just no line. Would I want a piece of hardware like a ring with an eyespliced line? I would think the spliced line would be preferable over a bowline. Im not sure about your ...

Cabin Sole
Im looking for ideas on how to reface my cabin sole. I have admired some of the work others have done with this project including several of Tim's detailed descriptions. However, most of the soles that I have seen others build consist of a flat section that runs down the middle of most of the cabin....

Hatch slides
In an effort to rebed leaking hatch rail slides I had to remove the hatch. The hatch has wooden slides on the underside that rest on the metal tracks mounted to the cabin top. Over the years this wood has worn down from rubbing back and forth as the hatch opens. Now there are exposed screws that hol...

ice in the bilge
The short version is......due to many distractions when I put the boat away this fall about 1-2" of water was left in the bottom of the bilge (deep full keel). Now it has frozen. I know this is bad. The question is... is it worth doing anything about it now, or is the damage already done and ju...

How do people deal with the transition from a 16 guage wire run to a unit like my GPS that has VERY small wires (Im not even sure the guage)? I know they make step down butt connectors but I have not seen them cover this much change in size. Would you make several "step downs" with a short...

Re: A little more than I wanted to get into....HELP
I spoke to Moyer Marine this afternoon. They suggest that a stripped 3/8 hole is the starter hole size for the next size tap. Therefore, I would not need to drill out the holes in the coupling. I would just need to clean them up and tap them for the next size bolt up. If this does not work, I might ...

Re: A little more than I wanted to get into....HELP
I guess I might be able to drill new holes. Part of the problem is the tight fit to the transmission. I would guess there is only about 1/8". I guess I might have to get the coupling off either way. Anyone remove this before? Tim while I have your attention I would like to say thank you for thi...

Re: A little more than I wanted to get into....HELP
I looked at the piece that came off with the bearing again. It looks like about 1/4" of tube and the rest is fairing material. I reviewed the link about replacing the tube. Do you have a source for tube material? The deadwood is pretty thick but I will not get to the boat again until Friday. Th...

As part of preparing to go back in the water, I decided to service my stuffing box. the forbidden question... again: teflon tape
First, I know this was a touchy subject in the past but I have a question about teflon tape used on gas line fittings. Last fall I replaced the carb and fuel pump on my A4. When I did, out of home improvement habit and being new to engines, I used teflon tape on the connections. I will be starting t...

how to clean varnish from car seat...is it possible?
My wife spilled a can of Bristol Varnish on her car seat. Without knowing about the spill it remained on the seat until it was completely dry, imbedded in the cloth seat, and very hard. Is this a lost cause or is there something out there that might get this out?

question about the order of fiberglass layup repairs
Hello, My wife and I purchased a 'new to us' 1969 Pearson Coaster last winter. This is our first 'big' boat and I have not done a lot of sailing since High School when a friend of mine bought a Triton for almost nothing and we spent our summers sailing around Block Island. The engine on Orion never ...
