Re: Project Cal25
Great advice on the respirator. It's clean again and the filters are in a zip lock waiting for next time. I was able to remove the remaining material under the mast step today. http://muvvachicken.com/images/cal25/beam_deck5_8_09/camera_12_29_08%20007s.jpg This material was quite wet, obviously this...

Re: Project Cal25
On the surface maybe. Hold a hammer by the business end and push the handle into the core as hard as you can.....bet you'll get a puddle, or in your case a drip. Unfortunately, or fortunately, that wont work. While some of the plywood is delaminated most looks fine on the surface now. There are no ...

After reading the reviews I'm considering the The Rockwell SoniCrafter as an alternative to the Fein. The online reviews seem positive, anyone here take the plunge? Or, do I just man up and by the Fein?
Thanks

Re: Project Cal25
Another beautiful day, nothing like sweating on the boat. My goal today was to find the condition of deck under the mast step base. http://muvvachicken.com/images/cal25/beam_deck5_8_09/DSCN0767s.jpg Here is where I started http://muvvachicken.com/images/cal25/beam_deck5_8_09/DSCN0752s.jpg I used a w...

The mast is finally down, http://plasticclassicforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=4261 , so I can now begin replacing the beam. The first sunny spring day and what's more fun than playing with power tool on the boat? I started by removing the quarter round trim and the chain plates. Then I worked a ...

I'm the first to admit I copied the system presented on the Alberg30 site, http://www.alberg30.org/maintenance/SparsSailsRigging/UnsteppingMast/ . Here is a large shot of the mast coming down, http://muvvachicken.com/images/cal25/dropmast5_2/DSCN0711R.jpg . If you want more photo's let me know. I at...

Re: Planning to Drop the Mast - Cal25
Thanks for the quick replies!
I heard from a Cal guy that at least some boats have a connection just above the deck in the mast. Time will tell I guess.
I'll try to dig up the stanchion setup, that sounds pretty slick.

Planning to Drop the Mast - Cal25
I think I have the rig setup to drop the mast. The fittings are doused with penetrating oil and the boom is off. I hope this project is a free weeks, not months, so I want to figure out the details before I get the mast down. I disconnected the masthead wiring under the mast beam but I'm not sure ab...

I picked up a CT33 after finding a good review online.
Here's an example, http://www.noahsboatbuilding.com/noahus ... 33&eq=&Tp=
Money well spent. I've been boat shopping and it's been invaluable.

Lots of good advice. We all have a favorite solvent, sort of like comparing anchors or sealant, but I'll mention Seafoam. On more than a few occasions I've 'fixed' similar carb issues with a good soak with Seafoam. Either use it to clean the carb, put it in the fuel or soak the carb in it, the stuff...

Break your problems down, dont just throw parts at it. For example, the exhaust issue has nothing to do with reverse. If it were me I would do a compression test and see what kind of shape the engine is. If it's not completely rusty I would keep it. Get new pipe for the exhaust, too much potential d...

Some of this depends on what you plan to do with the boat. Are you racing and every week and need to be as slick as possible? Looking for to be the best boat possible? Or, do you like sailing more than sanding/scraping? There is nothing wrong with scraping off the stuff that comes off quickly then s...

If it were me I would create a sandwich of fiberglass cloth and a good marine plywood soaked/covered in epoxy. While not just simple, it gives you the option to paint or stain/varnish. edit.
