I have made a few plane bodies with purpleheart but thats all. Not sure of it's weatherability. Just because it is dense doesn't mean it will withstand the weather.

It is high in tannin and will turn your hands black, though.

One could cut sheet using a brake and a hand chisle. Brakes can be made or purchased from Harbor freight cheaply. The waste side will suffer distortion but the good side will not. And then I think no matter how well the manufacturer or the craftsman (I'm being real bold to lump myself into this category) strive for plumb and level, the boat will not spend much time in the plumb and level position but will wallow in and out constantly. Given the symptoms you describe, I agree the problems are probably related. Some thoughts on diesel but not your engine make specific. My diesels are tractors and cummins and I may be way off here because of that, but... A combustion engine is an air pump and a fuel pump with an explosion in between...

I guess I chose a misleading turn of the phrase. I don't know the genetics of either and was calling BL a second cousin to hedge in function.
