Re: white colored epoxy instead of paint
I did the rough math and if you were to buy the 5 gallon resin kit and a 32 oz of pigment it works out to roughly $34 per gallon of "paint". Heck if you want to be really picky and put it all together with shipping it still only comes out to $42 a gallon. Bilge coat is almost twice that a...

I hear that! That's why I usually try to haul by around the first of October here in Maine. I miss out on some incredible days on the water, but in between we get enough snotty stuff like that that it isn't worth the risk. Especially in Falmouth with about a 3 mile fetch to the southwest and northea...

Re: Yeah, things have changed.
The major problem we had in Falmouth back in the 90's was finding parking. It was tough and there was alot of slepping involved. That's about 90% of the reason we moved to PYC. Also, there are now limited dinghy permits at the town landing. This was really a necessity, given how ridiculous the ding...

Our Winter Worklists, 2007 edition.
Well, it's that time again... Inspired by Figment , I present My Winter Worklist, 2007. Some of these may seem vaguely familiar... Must do... 1. Run a vent line and install a fitting for holding tank. 2. Improve holding tank retention system. 3. Run fresh-water fill hose from deck fitting to fresh-w...

Re: We stayed at Falmouth Foreside Jeff.
As I recall, we rented (borrowed technically) a town mooring from someone. That was back in the early 90's. Sorry that's not much help. That doesn't fly in Falmouth any more. At least, not easily. The harbormaster doesn't allow any boat on any mooring except the boat that is on the permit applicati...

Make your own?? Has anyone done this and can speak from experience that it was a good move? See above... I dunno about polyethelene, but plywood and epoxy is a pretty low-cost method (so long as you assign no dollar-amount to your own time/labor). My little poo box used maybe $15 worth of material....

I love my Yanmar, but I'm kind of curious about these marinized VW engines: VW Marine. I also love the TDI engine in my Jetta.
I'm sure not going to rush out to buy one though! (Not to mention they're a bit large for a small boat...)

Figment's Last Sail (For 2007!)
Thanks to a nice invitation from Mike Haas, Tim, Britton, and I were treated to a nice sail yesterday aboard Figment. Tim arrived at my house in Portland at 0445 and we headed south, picking up Britton along the way in Amesbury. Despite some brief confusion about where we were going, we soon met up ...

One reaches a point in life where money is basically an abstract quality anyway; it's all just random writing on little bits of paper (or, more recently, on bits and bytes of electrical impulses, which are even more unreal). . Is that the point at which one has accumulated more debt than one could ...

Dasein, 668, was listed for 12,900. We paid 8000 (Thanks, Tim!) in September of 2001. She was in basically sail-away condition including 2-year-old standing rigging, lifelines, roller-furler, and jib, and 5 or 6 year old Yanmar diesel. Somewhat better-than-stock interior. Reasonable electronics (dec...
