O'Day Tempest

Mike, I don't know what type of boat this is but I don't think it is a Tempest. Here's a photo of one for sale near here http://www.niagarayachtsales.com/brokerage/23%20ODay/23%20O%27Day%20Profile.JPG Neat to see all these boats. Thanks for taking the pictures. I guess we're all just boat crazy! Lyman

Historical map site

I like maps too! With a background in geography, I like topographical maps and charts. I found this site http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm which has a lot of good historical maps. Just follow the links to find maps which might be of interest to you. Although some of the maps are quite old they...

New Website

Many thanks for the new website. Looks great so far! Any thoughts about a forum for the new site or possibly a link to this forum? No doubt you would attract a lot of attention from people interested in classic powerboats. Personally, I'd like to have just one forum to check on but the organization ...

Hull deformation

Opinions please. During the search for my present boat I came across several boats of the same class as mine, the hulls of which were deflected or deformed or "oil canned" by poorly placed and/or adjusted supports. This occured on flat sections of the bottom where there is little internal ...

Congratulations on the latest addition to the Lackey fleet! I look forward to watching your progress in this new adventure on the web and sharing it with you, if only vicariously. As a long time subscriber to WoodenBoat magazine I have seen and admired Lyman boats for years .... maybe it's something...

Tim, "I think boatyards and barrier coat manufacturers are enjoying a cash cow based on overplayed hysteria over an issue that, while real, doesn't apply across the board by any means. " My sentiments exactly. I hesitated to use the term "scam" but to a large extent it's "ca...

Barrier Coating Systems

I sail a 24 foot fibreglass boat on the Great Lakes for about six months a year. The boat is stored outside on a trailer during the winter. Given that I would have to strip off the bottom paint etc., is it worth going through this effort for the sake of applying a barrier coating system? Do these sy...

Waxing polishing etc. etc.

Thanks for the feedback guys. You pretty much confirmed what I already knew and am doing. It's good to know that I'm on the right track but it never hurts to ask because "better mouse traps" do get invented sometimes. Sailing vs cleaning - no contest. I spent a lot more time daysailing and...

Waxing polishing etc. etc.

My boat is now 17 years old - fresh water only, stored from October to April. Overall the off-white gelcoat is in good shape. Naturally the deck and cabin have lost their shine. The finish on the hull is ok but could be improved. I want to restore the shine as much as possible (reasonable) and am lo...

Daysailor

Tim, My boat has an aft helming position and I love it because I am separated from the crew by the mainsheet traveler and the mainsheet falls readily to hand. However I agree with Dave, 397 that single-handing takes foresight and some kind of tiller restraining device as tacking requires leaving my ...

Daysailor Concept

Tim, Commanderpete's posting of the 24' Truant Fantail photo led to this posting. For sometime now I've been wondering if you have considered having the rudder stock come out through the afterdeck, with the tiller arching above the rear coaming into the cockpit. A number of one design classes, like ...

How 'bout the C&C Redwing?

Yes, I agree it is nice boat. Not too many were built but there are a few around here. Here's one for sale http://www.bridgeyachts.com/01286.jpg Another early C&C design I like is the Frigate. These are even more rare but here's one currently for sale http://www.westwindyachtscanada.com/s36224.j...

I have to second Manos' comments. When I had my first Shark I was able to store it in my backyard on its trailer thereby facilitating spring and fall chores and reducing my cost of operation. I now have another Shark, complete with trailer, but I have no where to store it at my present house. Theref...

Cheer up guys! It's summer. It beats shovelling snow. The weather is bound to improve sooner or later. The weather here on Lake Ontario hasn't been great either. Roller Furling

Jeff, My name is Lyman. My boat's name is Scoot. The confusion is due to juxtaposition no doubt. The Profurl system I mentioned is called the NEC Furling System for headsails and flying sails. I can't tell from the advertisement how the system works. It makes reference to the use of hanked on sails ...

Roller Furling

Don't give up on the 150 Genny unless you have to. My Genny or #1 is a 180% sail. The sail is hanked on to the forestay. The system does not use a headfoil. The clew comes back practically to the cockpit. I love to steer from the low side and see the curve of the Genny as I work to windward. The rol...

Roller Reefing Genny

I agree with Nathan 110% ... Safety first then worry about sail shape. I single hand my Shark 24 a great deal but it is set up for racing. Therefore the only white sails I use are a full main, no reefing, and a #1. Setting and taking down the #1 when single handing is risky at best and downright dan...

Buzzard's Bay 25

I have to agree with you. The BB25 is a great looking boat and the WoodenBoat article was very interesting. It's nice to see an old but good design being revived. I'd really like to see one in the flesh though as things often look different in three dimensions, sometimes even better. If I could make...

Olin Stephens

Olin Stephens is partly responsible for my life long obsession with sailboats. In 1973 a friend of mine bought Canuck II, a Sparkman & Stephens Maple Leaf Class sailboat - 37 feet long, spoon bow, beautiful counter. She had an enormous main and a mast that seemed to touch the sky. She scared the...

Reciprocating Saws

I have a Porter Cable Tiger saw - 9.6 amps goes through almost anything. It has a really slick keyless chuck - just twist the chuck and pop in the new blade. Release it and you're good to go.

Filling void in deck

I found this group while checking Tim's site the othe day. Hi from Canada Tim. I own a 1986 Shark 24. Check out our website www.shark24.org and I'd like to ask the group's opinion on the following. When I was buying my boat in 2001, I sounded the decks and discovered a void or hollow in the bow area...
