George, Does the topping lift line remain in the inboard jaws while flying the chute? If so, how do you jibe the chute? We sail with pole either attached to the side of the boom or slung under it, like dinghy racers. OD racing - There are about 2500 Sharks in existence world wide and 4 clubs in west...

One design racing is THE way to go! I race a Shark 24 (Our website is www.shark24.org) and at my club, we have between 6 and 10 boats out for each weeknight race. First to finish wins. It's that simple and very satisfying. George - On the WL24, do you leave the spinnaker pole in that position all th...

Bilge Blower
Two years ago I witnessed a runabout with an inboard engine explode and burn only a few yards away from the gas dock. The driver escaped with his life, just, and the boat was a write off. It took a very long time to extinguish the fire. Portable extiguishers were inadequate and only a tug with a wat...

I think all sailors can benefit from a bit of racing experience, especially newbies. There's nothing like racing to teach you the basics of sail trim, boat handling and rules of the road in a hurry! It also makes you go out and sail under less than ideal weather conditions which will further add to ...

I don't speak from any personal experience but I read in Classic Boat magazine that the editor used a low pressure sand blasting techinque to remove the paint from the interior of a 1930's wooden sloop. It worked but the clean up of debris and sand from all the seams, joints and crevices was extreme...

Being fellow boat owners, we all sympathize with your situation and echo Rachel's thoughts. Please feel free to vent here. These people are the worst kind of low life to be doing this. Silicone is pure evil! I made the mistake of bedding a new plywood outboard motor pad on my transom using silicone. When I had to replace the pad, one year later, I couldn't remove it. My boat is a Shark 24 and has a cast iron keel bolted to the hull. These castings are quite rough and therefore contribute to drag. With my first boat , also a Shark, I would sand off the loose rust and other crud each spring, paint it with red lead primer and then bottom paint. By fall the bottom p...

I second Tim's thoughts re: aesthetics etc.
Each time I walk down the dock at my club I am pleased to catch sight of my boat. Even though she is one of over 20 Sharks there, I still think she is the best looking one of the bunch! But that's just my opinion!
