Make Do
So the first night out on a single-handed race to Bermuda, about 60 miles out from Newport, the bracket that connects my autopilot ram to my tiller broke in two. Now what? I can't hand steer by myself for the next five days! But I can't go back -- I've been planning for this race for over a year -- ...

Re: Moving jackstands
You only need one prop or substitute jackstand, because you only need to remove one at a time to cut them down to size. Take one out, put in a prop or substitute, cut the tube down on the one, put it back in, then take out the other and do the same thing. I'm assuming you can bring a sawzall or simi...

Re: Looking for boat hauler recommendations
It sounds like you've got some good recommendations already, but I'll just add that I have been really happy with Ron Wiswell at Marblehead Trading Company hauling my boat. He might not do the run himself, but I believe they also broker long hauls.

Re: September's POINTS EAST
First thing I noticed was the pristine clean bottom. I have a wife who wipes my bottom for me before all the big races ;-) The orange band on the mast is an interesting idea. There's no traveling in stealth for you. I stole the idea from cruisers Evans Starzinger, Steve Daschew, and Jon Eisberg. It...

Re: Low Wind Sail
A "Code Zero" sail is a type of Asymmetrical "Spinnaker", sort of, that can be used at apparent wind angles of down to about 50 degrees or better. The trick to being able to point high with a free-flying sail like this supposedly is to have a purchase system on the halyard so tha...

You can also convert the sail yourself if you have access to a sewing machine. A hot knife is useful, too. SailRite (http://www.sailrite.com/) has instructions (but I think they are no longer free)--you may be able to find similar instructions online somewhere else, too. When I did it, the sail alre...

I used KiwiGrip on my boat. The application material says you can put it over molded non-skid patterns, BUT the surface has to be clean. In any case, I would certainly fair and prime any repaired areas before top coating, whether with KiwiGrip or some other system. See: http://sailing.thorpeallen.ne...

Re: Cost effective approach for a tall tent?
One of my projects in June was to take down the tent I had built almost three years ago. GREYHAWK would be going back in the water at the end of the month, and getting the tent out of the way might make moving the boat easier for my trucker. With help from my Dad (of engine pull fame), we rigged a b...
