We did the bleach treatment to the system and the water seems to be just fine now. We did back off on the 1/4 tsp suggestion a bit though. We will see how this works out in a month or two.

It's not so much the LED itself I'd be concerned about, but the circuit feeding it. According to the manufacturer it's heat that is the enemy of the LED and the attached circuit and heat sink are designed to limit the heat buildup, even shutting the LED down if heat exceeds some preset point.

You got me wondering so I researched this and it turns out to be a fake. There are 4 cells in a 6V lantern battery which resemble a D cell battery only a bit longer, so don't go cutting up any poor old 6V batteries. Sorry about that, should always do the research before posting. :(
