I know this forum is all but dead, but now that Magic is back in the water, I'm feeling a bit nostalgic for the good old days when there was lots of activity and expert help from all over the country/world. I've met some good friends here who have helped me work through a ton of issues during the course of my restoration. I hope someone picks up the reigns and helps resurrect the forum; I'll keep watching and will help where I can if someone needs it.
I won't go into the details of the 4.5 year 'project' to get Magic back into the water (see http://www.alberg35.com for all the torrid details), but here are a few things I did while the boat was out of the water:
- Replaced standing rigging (1/4" 316 stainless 1x19 wire, swaged 1/2" eye on top, 1/2" Hayn Hi-Mod Mechanical fittings on bottom end)
- Fabricated and installed new 5/16" 316 stainless steel chainplates. 3/8" through bolted in bulkheads with stainless steel backing plates.
- Decks 100% re-cored with 3/8" end grain balsa. The layup schedule used 3 layers of 1708 biaxial cloth and epoxy resin. All through deck fitting locations were isolated with solid fiberglass to eliminate water intrusion possibility.
- Fabricated new rudder using epoxy encapsulated 1-1/2" meranti marine grade plywood.
- Fabricated new 1-1/2" 316 stainless steel rudder shaft with Edson silicon bronze tillerhead fitting.
- New 7/8" propeller shaft
- New Buck-Algonquin split coupler
- Stuffing box rebuilt with new Buck-Algonquin packing box hose, GFO flax packing
- Removed 2 seacocks and replaced marine head with composting unit.
Here are a few shots of Magic after her launch last week. She is 52 years old and ready for a new life.
