Alberg 30 Trailer project
Needed a trailer to get my Alberg 30 home for a refit. I tried doing the v berth in the marina and just wasn't able to get it done, too hot, too cold, good sailing weather....anyway just too many distractions to work on the boat while in the water. So I decide to take her out and bring her home. Called a few places and to get her home was going to run $1000 each way plus hauling out fees....what? 15miles.... I just figured it would be money wasted. I wanted to invest in a trailer, Price tag near $5-6,000....yikes. Next option build one. I decided to look around for something used that I could modify. Here what I ended up with for $900 28ft trailer, 2-6000lb axles built for a chesapeake deadrise. It is made of heavy duty material. All I have to do it make it work for a sailboat... So far, here what I've got
Weather turned cold again, snowed today...supposed to warm up again...look for updates or check out progress on our blog

Re: Alberg 30 Trailer project
yes, 3 in fact....Lincoln 135(110V) unit, which i am using in my yard to tack additional mods on trailer. I have a Lincoln pro Tig 175 for smaller project, stainless work and smaller gauge stuff and a Lincoln power mig 255, heavy duty welder... which I will use on the trailer to complete all the final welding. I keep that at a friends garage because we can do larger projects there. I hope to get the trailer out to his property in the next week...if I can ever finish getting it marked up...25 degrees here today....
if you look close in the pics you can see the gas bottle and small portion of welder

Re: Alberg 30 Trailer project
Thanks Crazer,
Order a new coupler Monday, 12,500lb bull dog....still hasn't arrived yet(from NC to VA.....HMMM)....and then this wet weather has turned my yard into a small pond.....so not much will get done on the trailer this weekend I am afraid. I may take wheels and hubs off and repack the bearings. Oh well...I will find something to do

What was so wrong with those hubs that you had to replace them?

Re: Alberg 30 Trailer project
I decided to put brake on the trailer. Originally I was not going to.... I am only moving boat a few miles. I just worried about the what if's too much. So as I started to recondition the drums. I just decided they were too far gone for new brakes. I just decided to replace them.TampaBay wrote:What was so wrong with those hubs that you had to replace them?

Re: Alberg 30 Trailer project
Got some new rubber on the trailer. Weather was pretty crappy all weekend but sun is shining now. Looks like I should get some good progress this week. Hope to finish the trailer up real soon.

That wheel and hub combo is interesting. I haven't seen that type before.

When you put the hub back into the wheel, how are you sure that it's all perfectly round?

Re: Alberg 30 Trailer project
These are old dexter axles, common uses were mobile homes and low boy construction type trailers. They have a 6000lb rating, the tires I bought are 14ply load range GTampaBay wrote:That wheel and hub combo is interesting. I haven't seen that type before.
You may not be able to notice from pictures but there is a notch if you will on the face/edge of the five fingers of the hub. The rim fits perfectly into those notches basically centering the rim as you tight the lugs. They are known as dismountable rims and tire size is 8x14.5. Not too sure if they are used in new production stuff anymore but parts are still readily available. The tires were a bit hard to find locally, but showed up everywhere on internet. I was able to find them locally but paid a bit more($15 a tire) for them.TampaBay wrote:When you put the hub back into the wheel, how are you sure that it's all perfectly round?
hope that helps
