Prop size?

Post by Jeff PT403 »

I'm putting a Yanmar 2GMF in my Triton what would be the correct 2-blade prop to use?

Thanks

Jeff,
Michigan props website (http://www.miwheel.com/) should provide the info you need. Good luck!

I'm going to hazard a guess that the 2-blade prop necessary to put that much power into the water is going to be larger than you can comfortably fit in a Triton's aperture.

I was thinking a 14 x 12 in a 2 blade, Do you think I would be better off with a 3 ?

The MINIMUM vertical clearance between the tip of the propeller blade to the hull or prop aperture should be 15% if the prop diameter.

I know of 5 diesel powered tritons off the top of my head. They all run 3-blade wheels.

The two Tritons I know of that have been re-powered with diesels also used 3 blade props. The aperture on a Triton is quite small.

Just repowered this year. Had to have a new prop made. It was a 12x9 right hand three blade. the old prop was a larger three blade.
I think you need three blades. Lots of fun prop walk in reverse !

So 12x9 three blade is the consensus?

Thanks Jeff

Jeff

I have re-powered two Tritons with diesel, one with a Perkins 3 cyl 18 hp and the other with a Vetus 2 cyl 13 hp. Each engine had 2.72 to 1 reduction gears. In each case I used Campbell 3 blade propellers on the Perkins it was 13 x 9.5 and on the Vetus it was 13 x 7.5.
Each engine had a max RPM of 3600 and in each case that was about the max I could achieve at full throttle.

Jeff

that sounds about right. I get 3500 rpms before the stern sits right down. Definetly need a three blade prop.

I didn't do the instal but when I had a triton it had a Yanmar 2gm20F with a 2 blade prop. I never had any issues with it.
