Does epoxy resin go bad in the can?

Post by John, CD28 »

Is it ok to use epoxy resin, and hardener, that's been sitting down the cellar for 5 or 8 years? Does it go bad in the can?

If it's been in a stable enviroment (no freeze/thaw) and the containers were "unopened"...they should be ok touse try a test batch first...

If the containers were opened it's a crapshoot they didn't dry out enough to change properties over the years...

That old of Epoxy is nothing I would use, but that is only my opinion, That stuff ain't that expensive, if it something you're doing where failure is no big deal it's worth a try, beats throwing it away. But if you're trying to keep water out, or the rig up I wouldn't risk it. There are many different brands , I would contact the maker for an honest assessment. I have trouble with paint that and kids,,, that old!!!

Call the manufacturer.

I've always been told by sales reps that a solvent free epoxy (not "epoxy paint") has a near indefinite shelf life as in 30 + years.

I've used ten year old WEST - no problem. It really has no practical shelf life. The hardener will darken though so don't use it where you'll varnish over it. WEST Sys hardener will go almost purple, but still work fine.

If it has gotten cold, you might see some whitish sludge in the bottom- just set the container in a pot of very hot water for a while, and that will reabsorb.
