Varnish in beard!

Does anyone know of a good way to get varnish out of ones beard other than washing ones face in solvent?

The particular varnish in question is Interlux Schooner.

Sounds like you are in a sticky situation. I recall my own "epoxy in hair" incident. Yes I did wash in solvent.

I jest, but I know it's a pain. It's hard to imagine that anything but solvent will get it out, but I wonder if oil would help to break it up and soften it? Something non-toxic like olive oil.

I should see a friend tomorrow who is a professional varnisher; I'll ask him.

My partner is an artist (oil paints), and after chuckling about it she suggested "The Master's" soap. It's a soap (available in a bar or a tub of creamy stuff) that she uses to clean her brushes as an alternative to solvents. Not sure if varnish is as easy to deal with as oil paints, but it would surely be worth a try!

A couple of years ago I got polysulfide in my hair. I had to cut it out. Ended up with a buzz cut.

Ok, Maybe it was more than a few years ago. I DID have a reasonable amount of hair back then. At least around the sides.

Thanks for all the good advice.

I went with the brush it while drying to prevent hairs sticking together method. My beard is brown, so aside from being a bit stiffer than normal it is not really noticeable.

I have also had an "epoxy in hair" incident. "Varnish in beard" is benign by comparison.

Hmm, you may want to consider some disposable protection.

First time I ever shaved was because of resin in the beard.....

Not a pleasant experience.
Brush it out to get as much out as you can, wipe it down with approved thinner if it's safe, if no thinner is safe let it dry and work it out with your fingers by rubbing the hair together.

I've actualy been beardless for a while now, but from long habit still use a bandit kerchief and put my hair in a pony then tuck it into my collar when I do fiberglass or other 'messy' work.

Chip brushes are cheap and less troublesome than using your beard. And you don't have to wait to grow it back to usable length.

Sit in the sun for a couple of years. Sorry, I could not resist. Nail polish remover is milder and has worked for me.

Decide that you like your beard varnished and suggest outloud that you may do the rest of it. Once varnish understands that you want it there it will peel and lift immediately. Except on any inside corners...

When I use a heat gun, I, like everybody else, use a scraper. I normally recommend a Pro-Prep scraper, but I'm not sure if that's the right one for a varnished beard.

As it turned out, we communicated about it via e-mail. His recommendation wasn't anything too exotic, but I wanted to follow up anyway:

Acetone is the only thing that's going to dissolve that varnish. If he just keeps rolling it around between his fingers, it will eventually fall out.

Presumably he meant the varnish, not the hair...
