Gooseneck

Post by Skipper599 »

Hi everyone; I haven't been on the forum for a very long time and I see it has not been too active ... pity!

Anyway, I have a situation i need to deal with regarding a Gooseneck fitting for my mast. I have an older oval Selden spar that was originally on a Albin Vega 27 back in the 70's ... it incorporated a 'Boom roller furling' system that I have decided to remove. I much prefer slab reefing as opposed to the roller system, which tends to spoil the airfoil shape of the main-sail when reefed in this manner.

My problem is, by removing the "through the mast" shaft assembly, I've also removed the clevis yoke the boom attaches to, thereby forming the Gooseneck. My challenge now is to obtain a totally new Gooseneck assembly to either rivet, or bolt to the mast in its place. I have plugged and welded shut the 1" holes the shaft used to pass through, and I'm now ready to install a new bracket.

Here's my dilemma: I contacted Selden USA ... they recommended I use their Universal bracket which (according to them) would fit this older spar. They recommended I should work through my local Selden dealer in Canada however,on contacting this person (who is obviously very well informed on the Selden product), he told me the Universal bracket will NOT fit my spar. I persisted a little by sending him a full size mast profile which he could match with the part ... he responded the bracket does NOT fit the profile ... and there is no Selden part available that does fit the profile.

What to do??? ... I'm now looking to have a Gooseneck custom made. Has anyone any experience with mast shops who can do this? Bear in mind I'm in the PNW ... Vancouver, Canada ... a two hour drive north of Seattle.
Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your local sailmaker will probably be able to point you toward a good solution.
