Rainy day race pic

Post by s/v Groovy »

Last weekend I was tagging along with Anacortes Yacht Club race, on a friends sailboat. It rained all day, wind~12-14kts.

I like this pic, grey sails, grey day...

Okay, tech-sters, what/how is that break in angle on the backstay up near the masthead?

There is a flexible whip extending aft from the masthead with a ring in the end, through which passes the backstay. When the backstay is slack (as when sailing in very light air), the batten holds the stay up and aft, preventing it from fouling the fat roach of the main with every tack.
