While I do feel that the the desire to become famous in and of itself is often a twisting of the desire for a powerful connection with the transcendent forces of the universe, I would like to announce my film blog. I have been using my minidv camera to shoot short films of sailing. None of them are much longer than a minute. I try not to talk to much. I just think for those of you working on projects over the winter, stuck in cold sheds, sniffing and scraping who knows what, you are looking at the hidious underbelly of this beast we call sailing. I say to you, keep the faith. Make lists and keep going. The sailing will come. I will use this thread to announce updates. If you have camera angle ideas please let me know.
Go to this link and it will send you into the films.

Hi Robert,

For those of us who haven't bookmarked your site, I wonder if you could include the URL in each update here so that we can easily locate your site without the terribly exhausting task of scrolling to the beginning of the thread for a link.

Thanks for your consideration for us lazy folk! :<)

N,

When reaching in flat water, I like to sit on the lee side, lean back on the extended main sheet and steer with the foot. The look of the stable shear line and horizon divided by the everchanging bow wave begins to create a very pleasing state. I still have not captures the feeling on film, I need to extend the pole cam again, lower and further aft.

I think you ought to suspend the pole cam roughly horizontally behind the boat, shooting forward (obviously) and perhaps supported by the mizzen somehow. That ought to create some interesting shots.

Camera Operators

Post by rshowarth »

Robert-

I am sure any number of contributors on this Forum would be happy to volunteer as camera operators or to take the tiller while you filmed.

I have a feeling Tim might volunteer Nathan to take a Nantucket Sleigh Ride in a dinghy towed behind your Triton, in lieu of the pole.

Thanks for the videos,

I've done that before... I've also been swung out on a boom of a 60 footer once....

I tell you what: If someone will fly me out there, I'll take the sleigh ride!

Now, that is some cool filming! I like your new pole cam a lot. I'm sure you'll soon have the rigging system perfected.

Now I understand why you wanted that mizzen mast: it's to support your comprehensive pile of filming equipment! Are you really Steven Spielberg?

Pole cam is fantastic. As a sail shaping tool alone it's invaluable. At times it's like you have a photocopter following you. Great stuff.

Photo request: Do you have a shot of the horizontal leg of your coaming board, aft of the winch?
