Early triton exhaust

On my Triton #15 the Exhaust has some sort of muffler at the stern of the boat. Does anyone one know if this is the original configuration? I assumed all the old cooper monster exhausts just ran out to the stern. I kinda looks like a water lift muffler but the inlet is on the bottom which doesn't make sense to me. My issue is I'm getting a small amount of water back down the exhaust on the #3 and #4 exhaust valves while sailing. That's caused them to stick and #4 to break over the last 4 months of sailing.

You have the copper monster out of the boat... don't put it back.
Scrap it and do a nice quiet little waterlift.

I believe what you have is a waterjacketed "dry" exhaust. The exhaust runs through the center of the pipe and the cooling water runs through an outer jacket to cool the exhaust and keep it quiet.

After a while, the metal on the inside of the jacket starts to go and water leaks into the exhaust part and runs up into your engine. The insidious part of this is that you never see it happen because its on the inside of the muffler.

As Figment says, now that you have it out, replace with a modern waterlift. You could probably buy your new waterlift with the scrap value of your old copper piping!

Yep it's insidious alright. I pressure tested the pipe and muffler last night. The pipe held 30 PSI just fine, but when I ran water through the muffler section I had a small stream running out the inlet. Looks like it's time for a water lift system. Any suggestions as to where to place the water lift? I know it's supposed to be below the manifold but there isn't allot of room under the cockpit floor.

Mine sits in the forward inside edge of the port cockpit locker. I will have to dig for pictures.

I literally just installed the small VernaLift water lift on the sole in front of the engine,under the companionway ladder step. It is a good fit there. I have seen on some Tritons where this space is used for batteries but I have moved the batteries to another location. Now the fuel water separater, raw water strainer and Vernalift share this space. It works well for this.

Brian, I would be interested in a picture of your setup. My former battery area is pretty busy already and I don't think I could fit an exhaust in there. Do you have raw water or freshwater cooling?

I relocated my batteries where the stock ice box was (now removed) as Igloo does a much better job and I move the cooler where I need to.
Britton - Yes I have purchased and installed the fresh water cooling kit from Moyer Marine which I have also installed in the ice box location. Even though on both 346 and now on 466 I removed the stock ice box I have left the port side cockpit ice box access hatch alone as I find it nice for all kinds of other access in this case to fill the heat exhanger with coolant. Yes, I will take pictures. I am not much of shutter bug. sorry
