Well, I've always thought sailboaters were smarter ... news report tonight of a woman on her sailboat in the Vancouver BC area seriously injured when her boat blew up.

It seems she opened her boat this evening and smelled propane. She then went into the boat but could not "see" from where the smell was originating.

Not having a flash-light she did what you would not expect - - - she lit her "lighter" - - -
omg - - - She must have had a death wish!

I'm still not sure whether we should feel sorry for her - - - or what???

The explosion took the top clean off the 30 foot boat and blew the owner into the back end of the cockpit. - - - Severe burns and broken bones - - - She managed to crawl off the dock and seek help. - - - Lucky she's still alive.

Guess I need to stop being smug about sailors being smarter and admit "we" can screw up too.

I will add, this is just the first news report, and we all know reporters are selling "news" so if there is any change in this story, I'll be sure to report that too.

How do we send in an application on her behalf for The Darwin Awards?

If you Google 'propane explosion sailboat' you'll get plenty of hits about the general subject, including several videos of this incident.

At 50, she would probably not qualify for the Darwin Awards according to their stated rules. Her genes are already out of the pool. (That's meant to be momentarily droll, not a comment on age.)

Remember, that checking for leaking fuel should always be done by "matchless" skippers!

(well ,in this case lighterless..... but that doesn't have the same zing!)

The latest I've heard about this particular incident is, the Taliban are doing everything possible in their power to recruit her stating she would be their very first . . . "recyclable human bomber " claiming a huge savings to their organisation.

The savings would be realised by the fact they would need far fewer virgins if they have this woman train all future human bombers.
