When my father bought his Cheoy Lee Offshore 41, the previous owner was a bachelor who liked to entertain the ladies on the boat (so we were told). The boat was named "Named After You" so he could truthfully tell each one . . .

An entertaining aside - screening parts of the movie "Patton" for my students a few days back, the sign on the side of the halftrack George C. Scott is riding on - big white letters Army style - says "WTF".

Viewed last week at the Golden Gate Yacht Club on a 30-something sailboat out of San Diego: "Rode less traveled".

For some reason, "rode to poverty" immediately came to mind.

I actually thought of naming one of my previous boats "April Fool" - as in one who waits for April...

Then I thought of calling in a mayday --- "This is April Fool, April Fool...."

A boat moored a few over from mine is a trimaran named "Nice Tri"

I also have seen the name "My last boat... II"

My first attempt to post a picture. Here is a power boat in Belfast harbor that lived up to it's name. It sat on a mooring, neglected for several years until she broke loose in a storm.

Funny, there's a "Not for sail" powerboat in my dock too.
Curiously enough there's also a sailboat named "4 Sail".
Wonder if those guys are friends and the names are meant as a semi-private joke...

On the good side, one of my all-time favorites (really, not kidding), a boat in Seattle named Y-Knot
On my dock there's also a Dufour 38 Classic named "Omega", in which each letter stands as the initial for one of the five co-owners. Pretty neat, once you know the meaning.

In fairness to the owner, that was the name of the boat as it came to him. I think its kind of cute, though!

In my younger, irresponsible days, I organized a drunken boarding party onto motor yacht docked in Kennebunk because of its obnoxious name: Cash Flow.

In retrospect, I feel quite badly for any fear caused to its occupants.

That said, I think the least tasteful boat names are those that (even obliquely) reference the source of the funds that purchased it.

Seen on a power boat (or is that redundant?) on the Chesapeake last Sunday: "IV Play"

I thought maybe the owner was a doctor.

One that I saw that I actually liked is called "Tiramisu". Hee! I love tiramisu, and I think it makes an excellent sailboat name.

Well, I must admit.... my boat is called "Jet Lag" for two reasons : because it is a B-Jet and because I earned the money to buy it working in the US, with a few jetlags... (that's probably what you call "obliquely" :) )

This old lady has been around the marina for about 5 years now. Left the dock twice, IIRC - once to the yard, and another time on a two-hour tour. There is a brand new 10' FoldABote (PortABote?) in her cockpit, left right where it was delivered, its' packaging decayed around it. Never even been assembled. This picture makes her look good - trust me!

Just a few days ago I was reading about Boat U.S.'s annual survey of most common boat names. Number one on the list was "Wet Dream." Not only is it unoriginal, it's also not half as clever or funny as those choosing it evidently think it is.

This is a very entertaining page, keep them coming !

Saw a large cabin cruiser in New Harbor, Block Island called "Gas Pain"

I saw a powerboat named "Double lick" last week. Seems like it would be a bit awkward (three times in a row, no less) on the radio.

heard over the radio this weekend:

- "A Pension Deficit"
- "Guys" (hailing goes like this.. "Guys, Guys, Guys"

We were both sailing under the Logan Airport glide path at the time. Neat name but worthy of this list.

I saw a boat this past week in the local Navy marina (our tax dollars at work - they pay something like $1/ft) that was home built, a bit oddly designed and named "Hoof Hearted".

If you don't find it funny, say it faster.

Hope they never have to call the Coast Guard for anything... sheesh. That makes the "Never mind" fellow's misunderstandings seem like child's play.

You know, it's pretty sad how so many people think they are so much more clever than they actually are.

The sad part is that they walk amongst us and worse yet, they vote.

I also noticed something else interesting: A few posts up, mdidriksen posted a bad-boat-name photo of a boat named "Ship Faced." Now it has been cut off on the right hand side, except, when I went to write this reply, and scrolled down in the "thread review" that you can look at while you are posting... well then the whole image shows up again. I even went back to the thread to see if I had just not scrolled over or something, but no, in the thread it went back to being cut off.

I wonder how this might affect other (past) forum photos?

(Not that I'm complaining, but just noting new things when I see them.)

Well that's interesting, because I only see part of it now (but I could see the whole thing when it was first posted). It's not taking up my whole monitor, nor is there any way to scroll right. Weird!

Even weirder, when I use "topic review," the whole things shows up.

Aha, I think I have figured it out! You see how now (at least for me), our avatars and user info are on the right, whereas they were on the left before? Well that right side border (between the post box and the avatar area) seems to be "flexible." I always keep the browser window as wide as it can be on my screen, but for an experiment I moved it over (so that the left part of the browser window was "off screen" to the left and no longer visible to me), and then I "tugged" on the lower right corner of my browser window and moved the the right edge over farther to the right. Voila! the whole "Ship Faced" was visible again.

However, I do think this must be some sort of change, because with the prior forum software (same browser and screen on my end), I could see the whole photo. It's like that other software (or tweak or version or whatever) automatically made it fit.

But like I say, in "topic review" when I'm typing a reply, I can see the whole photo.

Actually, it's not exactly "working," because I have the choice of either not seeing the right half of the photo (and I would presume, other photos?) in its entirety, or not seeing the left half of everything. What was successful was that I figured out what was happening.

It seems as though the previous forum iteration would size things to fit one's browser width (?), whereas this one does not, but instead "secretly" tucks things into an expandable "edge" on the right (where the text part of the forum meets the avatar column. An odd thing about it is that my monitor is already wider than it is high (1280 x 800)

I haven't noticed this effect on any other site, so I still kind of wonder about it. I guess I'll keep an eye out, and if I see it happening with any other photos, I'll start a thread in the "forum questions" area.

Perhaps because it was my first weekend on the water in a while, or perhaps it was just a good weekend for bad names:
