Best practices vs industry standard

The recent discussion about Teflon tape and thread sealer http://www.plasticclassicforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=4066 caused me to think about best practices vs what generally passes for good in the trade. It reminds me of the quote
the good is the enemy of the great
While most (if not all) of us restoring "classic plastic" are not striving for perfection, we are attempting, whenever possible, to do the best we can so that our boats will be better than we first got them and we can take pride in them. Even when I can't afford perfection, I appreciate knowing what the best procedure, material or whatever is. In that way I can make an evaluation of what the possible short term savings in time and money are in comparison to the possible longer term costs. For example if I go sailing without a life raft I save a couple of thousand $ at the possible cost of life.

I had never considered using tape and dope at the same time, but from now on I probably will. My intent is not to re-open that discussion, but rather to point out that I appreciate the opportunity to learn about this practice.

In _my_ opinion, much if not most of what passes for "good work" in the marine trades is not up to the standards which I consider adequate for my boat. I find that the advice presented on this forum to be far better than 99% of what can be found elsewhere. My wish is that people continue to share "best practices", even if some consider them "over the top" for this is how I learn.

Wich brings me to extend a big thank you to Tim for hosting this forum and to all who contribute. It is certainly invaluable to me.

... Very well said Ric, and that's exactly what attracted me to this site in the first place.
