Winter Worklists, 2008-2009

Post by catamount »

Mike started this thread in 2006, and Nathan started one in 2007, but no one has stepped up yet this year, so here's a stab at my list for this winter:

in no particular order--
  • swap engine for replacement (same make & model), with new engine mounts, etc...
maintenance on shaft, propellor, stuffing box, etc...
    install additional fuel tankage(?)
    new cabinetry for engine box
fixed quarter berth instead of pipe cot
install marine SSB radio transceiver, antenna tuner, grounding system and backstay antenna
replace batteries and upgraded charging system with new alternator, regulator and shore power charger
repair nicks in gelcoat, polish and wax topsides
build bookshelves for bulkheads and navigation station
overhaul and expand the galley, re-locating the sink and building new cabinetry all around, including a built-in icebox
curtains or sunshades on cabin windows
    door for head compartment
cabinetry and shelves in head compartment
    headliner (? or paint overhead)
other miscellaneous interior projects to improve storage, comfort, and general liveability
lots of miscellaneous little rigging and deck projects

Hmmmm.... the list from two years ago bled into this years and maybe its time for a new list:

1. Install new traveler (in progress).
2. Hook up grey water tank and pump (in progress).
3. Replace aluminum deadlights with stainless to match the stainless portlights (working with Garhauer on this).
4. Rebuild Balmar alternator (bad bearings)
5. Fix leaks in FG water tanks (replace?)
6. Replace old crappy Edson steering pedestal with shiny new one.
7. New anchor platform and bow pulpit.
8. Replace 2" scupper drains in cockpit.

This list is significantly less than previous years... but I'll still be lucky to get through half of it.

Finally got a list that is small. But with building a new bathroom this winter it is still plenty.

1. Mortise solid bronze half oval into cockpit combing top
2. lots of coats of varnish
3. strip mast, rewire, sand and paint, upgrade standing rigging

This years list looks a lot like last years list (and quite similar to the year before). However, this year I am determined to:
- refinish interior cabinet doors with fresh varnish
- lift, repair and rebed the teak toerails
- replace last of standing rigging ( new turnbuckles already in transit!)
- replace/rebuild starter
- paint interior
- paint exterior
- install new propane locker
- remember that it is a boat; don't kill myself working- go and have a good time sailing it with my family!
Good luck with your projects,
David

This winter's list for Sin Tacha:
Put a 3rd reef in the mainsail (done).
Re-cut and repair the old spinnaker (done).
Go Sailing :-)
Replace cockpit drains and thru hulls in transom.
Install new bilge pump.
Go Sailing again :-)
Make a chain-stopper for the anchor chain.
Sew new cockpit cushions.
Start thinking about re-wiring the whole boat, while sailing of course!

It has to look better than the worn through varnish I get in August from stepping on it, and I refuse to varnish again half way through the season. I know boats are high maintenance, but I draw the line at mid season work that isn't for something that broke!

Concordia combings have it, and it does look sharp, so I'm stealing the idea.

A couple years ago my boss went on a cleaning spree, or rather he got everyone at work to do it for him. The stuff he wanted me to throw away was beyond comprehension. Part of it was many feet of various bronze shapes, many of which are hard to impossible to find today. That's where I got mine. Jamestown Distributors carries solid brass half oval, which is a reasonable facsimile. I will check with the parts manager at work for some other possible sources.

1) Have Tim paint the boat.
2) Worry about whether I should have tried it myself after all.
3) Paint boom and stop worrying when I am reminded what a crappy painter I am.
4) Fabricate new stanchion bases.
5) Prep worn out old diesel. Can't afford new one.
6) New sails (if $$ hold out)
7) Fabricate new water injection header for old diesel to replace rotted unit.
8) Fab and install water tank.

and

9) DON"T SCRATCH THE PAINT!!!!!!!

I can say I haven't had a moment of second thoughts about passing on the final paint job. Letting someone else, with the skills and facilities deal with the fussy paint was a good decision for me. Maybe someday I will learn to use the expensive paints. Then again, maybe not...

Replace main bulkhead and mast beam.
Build new polypropylene water tanks.
Build new hand rails for inside and outside of coachroof.
Finalize and build an interior!
Learn how to scarf plywood...

Yeah, that is about it. (Grin)

So it is May 1 and I have not accomplished (to completion) any of the projects on my list!

In my defense, I didn't haul the boat out until the end of October, and we did have a lot of snow this winter which made for some good skiing!

I do have some time, though. Given all the snow days, the kid will be in school until the end of June, so we won't launch the boat until then. With my semester drawing to a close, I'm getting psyched up to put in some (nearly) full-time effort on my project list between now and then!

Perhaps you need to add something to your list that you can cross off. Me... I added launching, that will be crossed off Wednesday.

Bill that is an obscenely good looking boat. You are making me look bad. I hate you. Image

Unless I am preparing for a major mission I find boat lists depressing. I just keep the next item in front of me.

Thanks, but it I have to admit that it is really Tim that is making you look bad. He gets the credit and I get to sail the boat. Pretty sweet deal I think.

That picture was taken right after we raised the mast today. And all I can say is that sailboats really need to have their mast up. What a mess of lines and crap when the mast is lying on the deck. Glad to have that behind me. My next task, weather permitting, is to spend 6 hours doing 1 hour worth of work tinkering with the rigging. Been waiting for a long time for that day, tomorrow I hope.

Cheers, Bill

Happy MD, although I'll be heading off to work in a few here.....

I too hope to be sailing within a month.

Britton,

Plumbing and lifelines are overrated. Grab a bucket and don't leave the cockpit. You are there. Sail and enjoy! She is beautiful, the color is both unique and gorgeous.

Thanks. Pictures don't really do the hull color justice either.

Neither did the weather conditions on that day...

It was more from the pictures on Tim's website and conversations with Figment is where my opinion formed. I remember when you and Tim shot it that you were not real happy with the eggplanty purple but it darkened nicely. It sets the boat apart.
