Brass Hinges

Post by Capn_Tom »

Last Spring I began to try to source good solid brass hinges for all of my interior locker doors. I decided on ABI's self closing offset hinge. When I tried to order I learned that they were out of production but that they were seeking a new manufacturer. I was told it would be about 90 days. I checked back last week and received the same response. I don't mind waiting another 90 days but I am not very optimistic that they will be available then. I like the idea of the self closing hinge since I think the doors would rattle less. I have been unable to find an alternative supplier. Any thoughts?

In the communication I have had with "non marine" hinge manufacturers the hinges have been brass plated steel or the pin/ spring has been steel. This would of course be a problem on a boat. The fun part is the amount of effort it takes find someone knowledgeable enough to get the information you need!

Just a quick reply. I agree entirely. I was looking for some brass cabinet latchs and found tons of plated ones on the internet, and some outrageously expensive solid brass ones. It turned out that ABI was the low cost provider for me.

Good luck in your search. Some times "luck" is what you need.

Steve

Those are in fact the hinges I've been trying to acquire. Jamestown mentions that they are available flat or offset but they only list the part number for the flat. When I contacted them they indicated that they do not have the offset in stock and of course I know why since they are not currently being manufactured. There are several marine retailers that still list the product but I think I've contacted them all and none have them in stock.

Since I posted my original question I have heard back from several other vendors of "solid brass" hinges all have indicated they have either steel pins or steel springs. Argh!

Any thoughts on my theory that self closing will reduce rattles?

Have you checked out Woodcraft to see if any of there offerings are quality?

The other way to go about getting rid of rattles, is to install a foam or plastic pads to provide resistance to the door front while closed, with a couple extra catches. In addition to whatever you have locking the door closed. (Rattles drive me nuts as well...)
